Materials Research Engineer – Optics (NRCCE 17-0076)
The National Research Center for Coal and Energy at the WVU Research Corporation is seeking applications for a Materials Research Engineer – Optics. This position is housed in the NRCCE Energy Programs Division and provides support for the programs of the Research and Innovation Center of the US DOE, National Energy Technology Laboratory at the Morgantown and Pittsburgh locations.
The incumbent in this position will support research in optics, photonics and laser processing of materials. The primary duty will be to conduct research on crystalline optical fiber fabrication, coating, and processing, through operation, maintenance and modification of the Laser Heated Pedestal Growth System in the NETL Morgantown Laser and Optical Processes Lab (B25-102). Support for the research will require LabView programming, and use of lasers, optics, computer vision, and photonic components. Additionally, this will include providing incidental support for the other optics and sensors projects and laboratories (including B25-210, B25-208), including specification and procurement of laboratory supplies and equipment.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Meet task requirements of NETL and AECOM research managers in attaining goals established for the NETL team and RIC programs as delineated in the statements of work pertaining to funding awards supporting this position.
Assist the Advanced Sensors and Controls team on the following tasks:
Fabricating uniform, high quality, low loss single crystal sapphire fiber.
Fabricating customized high quality single crystal sapphire fiber.
Developing novel optical fiber sensors for harsh environments.
Presenting technical findings during regular team meetings, as well as at workshops and professional conferences.
Operate, maintain, and modify a laser heated pedestal growth system (LHPG).
Create new functions to control, monitor and analyze the single crystal fiber growth process with Labview and Matlab.
Test the optical properties and performance of the single crystal optical fiber made by the LHPG system.
PhD in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, materials science, optics, or a closely related field
One (1) year of work experience post-PhD
Experience operating, maintaining and modifying a laser heated pedestal growth system for fabricating single-crystal optical fibers
Three professional references
Able to meet the requirements for gaining clearance to work on the NETL campus
