Ability to provide cost efficient reliable server and personal computer hardware, software and operating system support services to the department.

Assist with the design and documentation of system functional requirements in formats to facilitate the development of deliverables such as Request for Proposals and/or Information, custom development efforts, project based planning documents such as scope documents and client services communication.
Convey courtesy, enthusiasm, positive attitude, and service to support management involving patients, medical staff, physicians, administration, etc.
Coordinate Server / PC related activities of the department and monitor the overall quality of service provided.
Design and documents system level, IS operations level, and end user level procedures to support Network Server Systems.
Determine connectivity requirements for department and configure appropriate hardware and software in conjunction with ISD (UPMC) and/or CIS (University) personnel.
Develop simple systems for department and provide ongoing support for these systems.
Evaluate new hardware and software for its application within the department. Make recommendations regarding acquisition of new technology.
Evaluate the necessity of purchasing upgrades to software packages based on the use of the package, the nature of the upgrade, etc.
Hardware / Platform Engineering & Support - Understands and explains hardware for a platform. Troubleshoots basic hardware problems for a platform. Basic understanding of operating system and hardware-software interface for a particular platform.
Highly motivated to apply process improvement (CMMI) to increase product and service quality to achieve business objectives.
Install LAN operating systems and define the network for users. Ability to help users resolve LAN problems.
Interface with peers in other departments and coordinate efforts wherever possible to increase overall service and reduce costs through the potential elimination of duplicate or redundant services.
Operating System Programming - Assists in testing, debugging, modifying, tuning, and documenting operating system software. Uses and supports others in using operating system job control language, macros, subroutines, control modules, utilities, and diagnostics. Basic knowledge and applies server-side technologies or similar concepts on other technologies. Working knowledge of configuration files.
Prepare weekly status reports.
Project Management Skills - Plans and manages own work effort. Documents and communicates issues associated with own work. Apprises project manager of status, schedule variances, and outstanding issues. Balances quality of work with deadlines and budget. Suggests ways to better accomplish assigned tasks. Manages workload to meet project timelines. Controls project costs and communicate any project-related expenses to project manager.
Provide ongoing troubleshooting, support, and maintenance of production systems, including 24/7 on call coverage.
Provide service to ISD client community, patients, families and visitors, while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of all data and information through physical and electronic measures.
Provide support as required by ISD's Disaster Recovery Plan.
Regularly meet with department users to evaluate their needs and recommend appropriate hardware/software solutions.
Systems Administration and Support - Grows basic knowledge of current and planned system/server service levels and is able to identify signs of system/server performance degradation. Resolves and documents basic operation problems. Performs basic user administration under supervision. Performs basic OS installations under supervision. Applies basic OS patches under supervision. Installs basic software packages under supervision. Conducts basic system/server troubleshooting. Performs Tier 2 desktop systems troubleshooting of problems not resolved by Technicians using scripts, checklists, or other standard resources. Basic knowledge and applies server-side technologies or similar concepts on other technologies. Working knowledge of configuration files. Assists in testing, debugging, modifying, tuning, and documenting operating system software.
Systems Infrastructure, Operations, and Engineering - Under supervision or in support of a more experienced system engineer/administrator. Monitors platform/system/ network and advises higher level technicians/supervisors of status. Uses software and hardware tools to identify and diagnose problems and factors affecting. platform/system/network performance. Supports administration/ implementation/deployment of platform/system/network enhancements or new designs. Performs system software upgrades, including planning and scheduling, testing, and coordination. Supports and maintains implementation/deployment of new systems. Supports capacity planning and management, space forecasts, tape libraries, and software and hardware inventories.
Systems Technical Support - Assists with installation and maintenance of operating systems and performance tools. Assists with troubleshooting errors and problems. Executes systems programming procedures. Participates in on-call rotation. Performs many proactive system and log monitoring functions.
4 year academic degree includes courses in computer programming, systems analysis, system development, or systems engineering OR has acquired Core IT skills and knowledge via practical experience.

This requires 24 hours per day, 7 days per week availability during the stand by period. The frequency varies based upon the number of colleagues in the rotation.
