RAND is looking for a talented Digital Design Manager to join our in-house Digital Strategy and Communications Group, which is part of RAND’s Office of External Affairs. The Digital Group strives to create products that help make RAND research and people more accessible to a broad audience through storytelling and design.
In this role, you will work closely with the Creative Director of Digital Design to conceptualize and produce innovative products such as digital articles, interactive graphics, visualizations, microsites, and data tools. This will require you to think both creatively and critically and build consensus with internal clients and staff on proposed design solutions.
You will lead a small team of digital designers and storytellers focused on two main areas:
Continuously improving RAND’s core web presence, comprised of 50,000+ pages managed in Adobe Experience Manager (AEM). This includes working towards a forthcoming full-site redesign.
Telling compelling stories about individual research projects in a digital environment. This requires versatility and strong project management skills demonstrated throughout a project’s lifecycle, including requirements gathering, concept development, design (wireframes and mockups), oversight of development and production, launch, and evaluation of the project's performance.
As approximately half of your time will be spent doing hands-on design work, you will need to have a proven track record of creating engaging content, a keen eye for design, and a strong sense of visual storytelling. This should be supported by a human-centered creative process and a design-thinking approach to solving problems.
As a working leader, you will need to be able to estimate your work, and the work of your team, accurately and with confidence. You will also need to be able to persuasively communicate ideas and design decision rationale to clients and colleagues and generate trust in your expertise. As a committed mentor, you will evaluate team performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and manage that improvement through to realization.
Minimum of 6 years of experience working on digital design products.

Exceptional communication skills: ability to listen, provide feedback, inspire and mentor team members.
Ability to persuasively present design solutions to cross-functional internal audiences to generate excitement and consensus.
Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to evaluate, manage, and assign resources to projects based on required skill mix.
Experience in communicating and enforcing brand standards guidelines.
Experience with large, high-traffic sites and content management systems; understanding of production processes.
A genuine interest in the latest design trends and technological developments in the industry.
Experience with creating structured, scalable Design Systems for your design team.
Experience planning, executing, and implementing user research methodologies and practices.
Familiarity with Federal Usability Standards and 508 Accessibility Compliance.
Familiarity with workflow management tools like Jira or Workfront.
BA/BS in design, communications, marketing, HCI, or related field is required.
Qualified candidates will be expected to share references and a portfolio of work that speaks to conceptual skills, design thinking, and team leadership in a digital-first environment.
