The role of Safety Director is one of the key functions within the team, and it centers around technical safety engineering and safety management topics, while peers deal with cultural programs or special populations.
As a Global Safety Director, you will lead Alcoa’s efforts to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries and to decrease other safety incidents globally, by creating, driving, and implementing top risk management solutions, tools, practices, and systems.
Major activities/Key challenges
Provide examples, remove roadblocks, and help the various business units and their sites implement multiple safety risk management standards (confined space entry, fall prevention, lock-tag-verify, etc.)
Work with the business units, peers, and operations leaders to increase consistency through global solutions and strategies
Promote the sharing of best practices, learning, and internal benchmarking
Closely track progress on initiatives and report it. Compile, interpret, and communicate leading and lagging indicators
Keep up to date on regulatory and technological developments, industry tendencies, and creative solutions. Take necessary action proactively to improve and modernize the company’s practices
A needed, lead risk assessments, incident investigations, audits and training
Support programs and activities within the company EHS strategy, and fulfill other functions and tasks as needed
Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education
We are seeking for a safety expert, knowledgeable about fatality prevention programs, critical risk management, regulatory requirements, and the key programs necessary to keep workers safe in a high-risk industrial setting. Your key capabilities for this role would be:
Understanding and problem-solving capabilities in topics such as permit to work, machine guarding, cranes, management of change, mobile equipment, etc.
Deep understanding of programs to improve a safety culture and safety leadership skills
Familiar with robust root cause analysis techniques
Able to lead risk assessments using different techniques depending on the circumstances and needs
Capable to effectively develop and provide training on key safety topics, to the degree that the teaching can make others proficient to do their job safely
Experienced in auditing, familiar with using audit protocols, knowledgeable about globally recognized safety management systems
Able to positively interact with people from different cultures, backgrounds, and disciplines
Ability to influence, sell, convince
Ability to lead, take the initiative, organize, plan, and implement complex, multi-year initiatives
Succinct, clear and effective communicator.
Your Basic Qualifications
To be successful in this role and to play a part in our ongoing success you will have:
Minimum 15 years of total relevant safety experience. At least five years in the mining/metals industry and in a challenging and broad position
Specific experience in mining, refining, and smelting highly desirable
Safety engineer or equivalent. Masters preferred.

Customer oriented, good listener, superior people skills, open and direct, approachable

Fully fluent in English, verbal and written. Knowledge of French or Portuguese desirable
Domestic and international travel required
