We are seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer II to join our expanding Engineering team.
In this role, you will be responsible for product development and product engineering activities, specifically in the area of mechanical engineering. Design, model, document, test, and modify current and new components and sub-systems. Contribute to specific assignments and perform work which requires application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria of related engineering activities.
Principal (Essential) Duties:
Engineer detailed designs, perform analyses, test prototypes, and document completed designs
Develop design solutions and participate in preparing design concepts
Develop problem solving techniques to determine root causes for problems, propose solutions, and perform validations
Use hands-on approach for coordinating, building and evaluating prototypes
Review, model, analyze, and test to ensure the success of assigned projects
Participate in reviewing functional specifications, cost targets, and mechanical design requirements
Work with intra and inter-functional groups to optimize design and communication capabilities; work with external customers, suppliers and subcontractors, depending upon project and program activities
Coordinate, submit and release design information to be documented for production
Support the development of manufacturing test procedures and test equipment
Investigate and solve reported manufacturing and service issues
May lead development of enhanced Engineering processes, particularly related to mechanical engineering
All other duties as assigned by management
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of computers to operate effectively with Microsoft Office Suite of applications
Good analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Good interpersonal skills; strong relationship building skills
Strong organizational skills; attention to detail
Proficient with hardware hand and power tools
Ability to operate fabrication machines such as lathes and mills preferred
Understands design and certification for regulatory needs, including safety and environmental areas
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field required
Master’s degree is preferred
Minimum of three (3) years directly related and progressively responsible experience
Extensive experience in the field may be substituted for education requirements
Experience with mechanical design of complex optical-mechanical systems preferred
Experience with mechanical CAD software – SolidWorks preferred
Experience with mechanical analysis tools, including thermal, stress, etc. preferred
Experience with plastics design, including injection molding, vacuum/pressure forming; machining and sheet metal design; selection of processes based on needs and volumes
Experience with rapid prototyping technologies and selection of processes
Experience with product packaging approaches
Experience with DFX, including manufacturability, cost, quality, safety, etc
Experience with integration of optical and electrical components preferred
Experience with structuring bills of material
Knowledge of sensing and vision technologies, including FPAs preferred
Knowledge of illumination technologies preferred
Knowledge using PDM solutions such as PDM-Pro and Sharepoint
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to:
See and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity; standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and other similar tasks requiring physical activity and repetitive motions
Visual requirement is for close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus
Operate a computer and other similar office equipment, as well as specialized scientific equipment and related tools. 50% or more time is spent looking directly at a computer
Perform medium work - exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently
Ability to deal with stressful situations as they arise
Travel both domestically and internationally up to 10% of time representing ChemImage
The noise level in the work environment is generally low to moderate with isolated areas requiring hearing protection
Work setting is primarily office-based but conditions may involve limited exposure to chemicals, emitted radiation, fumes, dust, odors, gases and other substances when in a laboratory or field environment. Employees whose work setting may involve these substances will be informed by their managers regarding the nature of these substances and may request PPE as necessary.
