Our Career Works Program was formally started in 2019 and currently runs programming in-person and virtually across 4 locations. Career Works High, Great Start-Level Up, Artificial Intelligence Pathways Institute and Career Works Tech make up the four distinct tracks of Career Works. BGCWPA is one of ten Boys & Girls Clubs across the nation participating in the Department of Labor’s Youth Workforce Readiness grant pilot and has been recognized as a mentor Club by Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Job Summary
The Director of Career Development Programs will be responsible for managing the overall operation of Career Works, youth workforce development programs including youth development, vocational training, and organizational development; and understands the demographics of under-served communities and the need for access to high quality and culturally responsive career exposure and preparation. The Director will manage a team of Career Coaches and signature programs such as our summer internship program, Learn & Earn, early college programming and support the management of corporate partnerships. Creation of budgets, reports and oversight of the 21st Century Community Learning Center and recruiting students to the program are the key administrative duties
Responsibilities
- Research, suggest and design programming methodologies and curricula that help youth build career awareness and put them on a pathways to success, including but not limited to focused on academic remediation (through the use of adaptive software), real-world and project based learning, direct instruction, site visits, job shadowing, internships, and pre/apprenticeships.
- Support the registration and coordination of summer bridge programs in partnership with occupational training partners and companies
- Continuously appraise and evaluate the programs to achieve the established goals of providing the opportunity for young people to prepare for gainful employment and/ or post- secondary success, especially focussing on youth who do not have direct access to careers through their current educational network (i.e. youth who do are not given the direct opportunity to experience internships through their schools)
- Manage a team of youth career development professionals to implement career development programming initiatives at multiple Career Works sites and within teen programming spaces in the BGCWPA Clubhouses
- Coordinate the summer Learn & Earn program and PACTT affiliation for BGCWPA.
- Advise and assist in obtaining local, state and federal funds for career works programs and lead with data collection and evaluation for necessary reporting once grants are received.
- Research and define local job opportunities in the Pittsburgh region and beyond and provide opportunities for youth to be exposed to and learn about those opportunities.
- Maintain current knowledge of all pertinent rules and regulations affecting career and technical education.
- Facilitate interaction with business and community-based organizations such as schools and social service agencies to enhance the understanding of system initiatives and priorities and to elicit support and assistance in spreading the mission of BGCWPA career development programming and continuously acquire opportunities for youth to participate in real world learning scenarios and projects
- Collaborate with the Director of STEM Education on youth workforce development initiatives involving science, technology, and engineering
- Partner with Teen & Support Services to develop supports to combat job/life barriers to employment or post-secondary success and assist with AmeriCorps programming.
- Partner with the Advancement Team to facilitate corporate outreach to advance the mission of BGCWPA career development programs in establishing corporate opportunities and partnerships for youth to experience real-world learning at job sites through tours, job-shadowing, and other in-person, on-the-job learning experiences, such as internships and pre-apprenticeships.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Masters degree preferred.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in some combination of workforce development, youth development, k-12, higher education administration, strategic diversity leadership, human performance enhancement, curriculum design, corporate responsibility, social work, public administration is required
- Knowledge of adult development and positive youth development with an ability to design learning strategies and programs to enhance knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of youth development, leadership development, management, and organizational effectiveness
- Clearances Act 33, Act 34, Act 151 and NSOR letter.
- Mandated Reporter Certification within 45 days of hire
- Be able to attend a minimum of 12 hours of training per year.
- Attend CPR, Pediatric First Aid training within the first 90 days of hire.
- Strong time management, organization, and project prioritization skills are a must
- Proficient in Google Suite.
- The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs function require the following physical demands: lifting & carrying up to 50 pounds, pushing, any/or pulling, climbing to include steps, balancing, stooping, standing, sitting, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and signification fine fingered dexterity. Ability to tolerate environmental conditions: air conditioning, heat, dust fumes, noise, close quarters, etc.
- Perform all additional duties and tasks assigned by leadership/supervisors.
Certifications and Clearances
CPR, Pediatric First Aid, Child Abuse, Criminal History, FBI clearance, NSOR certificate, PA Disclosure and Mandated Reporter certification required upon hire or newer then 6 months. PA Staff Health Assessment and TB Test must be submitted upon hire and before start date.
