The University of Pittsburgh's Information Technology (Pitt IT) department is seeking a qualified Linux Support Specialist for administering and supporting Linux within Pitt IT's Client Services division. This is a technical position to administer and maintain client server enterprise IT services, and other mission critical technology systems. The Linux Support Specialist is responsible for ensuring continuity of service for departmental systems. The position is challenged with ensuring maximum availability and highest level of performance for production and other critical technology systems. Duties include responding to, triaging, troubleshooting, escalating, and resolving problems and system alerts regarding these environments, platforms for IT service infrastructures. Responsibilities also include the installation, configuration, and daily operational support of endpoint hardware, virtual environments, storage systems, networking, operating systems, and system administrative applications on cloud-based, Unix, and Linux platforms for IT service infrastructures.
The Linux Support Specialist will coordinate and perform upgrades and patches across these systems, services, and platforms as well as monitor system performance and network connectivity as it relates to enterprise IT service and research infrastructure. The incumbent will also communicate and collaborate with co-workers, stakeholders, and customers toward the resolution of problems and requests within these IT services and platforms. Knowledge of Linux operating systems, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills are required. Position requires prior experience in or familiarity with: Unix/Linux client and server administration, with a focus on Ubuntu and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Ability to create, modify and maintain Linux scripts. Perform patch management on workstation- and server-class systems. Networking and storage technologies as well as high availability, failover, and load balanced environments. Primarily working during the day, must be willing to work evening and night as required to support departmental operations.

Associate degree with three to five years of experience in complex systems analysis, IT services, and IT support in addition to administrative experience. IT experience administering and maintaining Linux computing clients, servers, and other mission critical technology systems. Equivalent combinations of education, relevant experience, and industry certifications may be considered per University guidelines.
